Album Review

Most of the material on this grab bag dates from early- and mid-'40s sessions for Decca. Rather muted and jazzy in feel, they're made more interesting or tedious, depending on your perspective, by the inclusion of many alternate takes (some previously unissued). As these are grouped together one after another, it can make tough listening for the general fan, although Turner completists will appreciate the attention to detail. Rounding out the collection are four 1963-64 tracks which awkwardly update Turner's R&B with modern soul and pop touches, and a track from a 1967 BluesWay LP. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide
