Album Review

Either the highlight of Smith's abilities to turn out a massively catchy pop single or an annoying sell-out, depending on who one talks to, "Friday I'm in Love" is a jaunty, upbeat track featuring the band at its most accessible and attractive. Smith's vocals retain their slightly wounded air as always, but his delivery is still just what the song needed. The usual pattern of an extended but little-differing remix from the band continues as well, though the stripped-down guitar intro to the remix is quite lovely on its own. Of the two new B-sides, "Halo" is a perfect continuation of the sentiments of "Friday I'm in Love." Smith's lovedrunk lyric fits the lovely, loping groove of the song, combining the usual talents and feel of the bandmembers in a fine way. "Scared as You" has a quicker pace to it, sounding a touch like the rushed apocalypse of "Disintegration" while lyrically reflecting on a similarly troubled, fractured relationship. It's not as all-out stunning as that earlier song, but still has a reasonable, very Cure feeling. ~ Ned Raggett, All Music Guide
