Album Review
Tori Amos developed an enormous, rabidly loyal following within months of her debut on the music scene. She was almost immediately booked as the main attraction on her own tour -- when she attempted to open a concert for Luka Bloom early in her career, the screaming crowd refused to let the talented headliner take the stage. This EP, along with her other CD singles, played a significant role in that boomlet of interest. They indicated a bottomless supply of terrific material, and allowed her fans to become Tori Amos collectors before she'd even released two albums. The B-sides on the "Winter" single aren't quite as remarkable as her much-discussed cover tunes, but they are gems nonetheless: the piano bassline on "Take to the Sky" provides as big an adrenaline rush as anything on her full-length albums. "The Pool" creates an evocative, cinematic synth landscape. "Sweet Dreams" features one of Amos' only attempts at social criticism. ~ Darryl Cater, All Music Guide
