Album Review
Alice Cooper’s volume in Sony Legacy’s Triple Feature series takes two albums issued in its Double Feature program from 2003 and updates this earlier package with a third album. These three titles -- 1989’s Trash; 1991’s Hey Stoopid, and 1994’s The Last Temptation -- are not regarded as seminal Alice Cooper essentials, but there is a case to be made that they are very significant nonetheless. Beginning with Trash, Cooper began to re-emerge from the shadows as a viable and creative artist who was not simply given to trading in on his legend, but to writing and performing new material that lived up to his own rep. And he succeeded to a point. He and his new band became a successful touring act, and the recordings themselves did draw fine critical notice for his new outlook as well as for the more intense brand of hard rock they offered. For any serious Alice Cooper fan, these recordings are well worth looking into, and become more consistent as they go on, with The Last Temptation being the best record he’d made since 1977’s Lace and Whiskey. For the price point, which is ridiculously low (three CDs for the price of a single budget CD), these albums are well worth re-evaluating. ~ Thom Jurek, All Music Guide
