Review
In Feb. 1963 Duke Ellington sponsored a Reprise recording date by Bud Powell (in a trio with bassist Gilbert Rovere and drummer Kansas Fields) that resulted in the album Bud in Paris. This set, released as part of Mythic Sound's ten-CD series of privately recorded sessions featuring the innovative bop pianist, is comprised of outtakes and previously unreleased songs from that studio date. There are many highlights to the excellent session including performances of some of Powell's lesser-known originals ("Bud's Blue Bossa," "Tune for Duke," "For My Friends," "Get It Back," "Trapped," "Free" and "Rue De Clichy"), a few of which deserve to be revived. Also memorable are an emotional "I Got It Bad" and a strong version of "Dear Old Stockholm." ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
