Album Review
The great swing trumpeter Buck Clayton had many Dixieland gigs in the 1950s, including this decent effort from 1960. Teamed up with either Bennie Morton or Cutty Cutshall on trombones, clarinetist Peanuts Hucko, pianist Dave McKenna, bassist Bob Haggart and drummer Buzzy Drootin, Clayton sounds fine on such warhorses as "Lulu's Back in Town," "At the Jazz Band Ball" and "Wolverine Blues." Although he was capable of playing more advanced music, Clayton gives a generous amount of spirit to these Dixieland tunes and the results should satisfy trad fans. This CD is the first of two volumes. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
