Album Review
This El Toro compilation is exactly the reason a music fan seeks out a best-of by a particular artist; in this case, it's "the Killer," Jerry Lee Lewis, the last remaining member of Sun Records' Million Dollar Quartet ( Elvis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, and Lewis -- who is wonderfully represented here by 31 tracks, all from his early period. They include not only his hit singles for Sun -- "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin On," "Great Balls of Fire," etc. (which would be on any comp), but there are also a few country cuts, and two tracks with the MDQ), an appearance on Steve Allen's television show, and four pre-Sun-era demos. The sound is terrific, the performances are electrifying -- because it is Jerry Lee at his very best -- and the presentation package is solid. The hippest thing is the cash; this little slab will not cost you an arm and a leg to procure, and, if played loud in your car, will insure you are the heppest cat or kitty on the road. ~ Thom Jurek, All Music Guide
