Album Review

Little Richard re-recorded his own hits many times over the course of a 50-plus-year career. And who could blame him? While Elvis and his Sun Records acolytes gained fame, fortune, and widespread success immediately, Little Richard Penniman, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, and others had to wait until the 1960s -- and none of them ever attained the riches they were entitled to or the fame they deserved. But this little volume, despite its rather careless presentation, and even its lack of true originality -- on the part of the producers, not Little Richard -- is testament to the fact that rock & roll and dance music do have a place next to one another rather than merely in opposition, and that Penniman's influence is still inspirational and far-reaching to anyone who really "gets" the primal sound of early rock & roll as it evolved from rhythm & blues. This set of Little Richard tunes assembled and remixed by the anonymous Big Beat Kings is imperfect, to say the least -- but that said, there is great charm in hearing Penniman's wails, stomping piano, and ferocious sexual energy rubbed hard up against modern beats and EFX. This is not for everybody, but in this case, it's the first attempt at placing a true genius and legend in a context for new ears to behold. ~ Thom Jurek, All Music Guide
