Album Review
Time Life's 2008 The Original Greatest Hits is another repackaging of the Killer's classic Sun recordings and it's a pretty generous one, too, weighing in at 20 tracks. All the major hits are among here -- "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On," "Great Balls of Fire," "Breathless," "High School Confidential" -- and so are a lot of the essential second-tier singles like "Down the Line," "Real Wild Child (Wild One)," "What I'd Say," "Invitation to Your Party," and "Break-Up." However, there are almost as many great singles that are conspicuously absent, including such necessary items as "Crazy Arms," "End of the Road" (one of Jerry Lee's few originals), "Big Blon' Baby," and "Drinkin' Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee." That said, everything that is here is excellent -- Jerry Lee's Sun recordings are nothing if not consistent -- and it isn't a bad way to get acquainted with the Killer's prime, even if it isn't a definitive portrait, either. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
