Album Review

This budget CD release from Laserlight (the listed years are educated guesses) features two versions of the Duke Ellington Orchestra. Released for the first time in 1992, the material includes several otherwise unknown Ellington originals ("P.S. 170," "Hi, June" and "Hi, Jane"), a feature for trumpeter/singer Money Johnson on "Hello Dolly," several remakes and the spirited title cut. Among the soloists are altoist Johnny Hodges, trumpeter Cootie Williams, clarinetist Jimmy Hamilton, trombonist Lawrence Brown, flutist Norris Turney and the tenors of Paul Gonsalves and Harold Ashby. This is good music that will satisfy Duke Ellington collectors but why no recording dates? ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
