Album Review

A moody, percussion-driven number from Kill Uncle, "Sing Your Life" itself is one of Morrissey's subtler pieces, and also one with a more upbeat and straightforward message than most. Compared to the great live versions he and his band did on the Kill Uncle tours, this studio take is a tad sedate in comparison, but it still has an attractive little hip-swing to it (Morrissey himself sounds like he's gasping for breath more than once, though). More notable are the B-sides, starting with an amazing, truly downbeat take on The Jam's classic about go-nowhere English life, "That's Entertainment." A creaky percussion loop supports Morrissey's lovely vocal (and guest Cathal Smyth's backing) and Mark Nevin's acoustic guitar work, while guest Kate St. John adds haunting cor anglais as a gripping final touch. "The Loop," a quirky, energetic little number with Madness singer Suggs once again guesting on vocals, concludes the release on an upbeat note. ~ Ned Raggett, All Music Guide
