Album Review
For this project from 1959, reissued by the Spanish Fresh Sound label in 2005, four notable arrangers contribute two arrangements apiece: one for a bluish standard and one for their own blues-oriented original. A pair of all-star octets perform the material (four songs each) and there are plenty of fine short solos along the way. Of the arrangers, Bill Russo's work ("East Hampton Blues" and "Davenport Blues") is most memorable and advanced, but all of the material is excellent. This somewhat obscure set is worth searching for, featuring good examples of the modern mainstream of 1959 jazz. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
