Album Review
Bear Family's Spellbound! 1955-74 is a double-disc set that captures highlights from Screamin' Jay Hawkins' recordings for Wing, Decca, Phillips, and RCA. Half of the set's 48 tracks were already issued on two Phillips albums, which were combined on one Edsel CD. Most of these songs date from the '60s, with only a handful coming from Hawkins' '50s peak. Strangely, of those songs, not one of them is the original "I Put a Spell on You," which means this is not a definitive overview. Instead, it's an interesting collection of Screamin' Jay Hawkins' campy, silly stuff from the '60s that will appeal to listeners who want to hear more than the usual hits. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
