Album Review
The first volume in the Nat King Cole Collection as presented by Collector's Choice Music in 2007 is a massive 220-track set that documents the singer's phenomenal success with material originally released on 18 albums dating from the years 1952-1965. The album titles, in approximate order of chronologic appearance, are Penthouse Serenade, Sings for Two in Love, Nat King Cole Sings/Ballads of the Day, The Piano Style of Nat King Cole, Just One of Those Things, Love Is the Thing, Welcome to the Club, Tell Me All About Yourself, Cole Español, Songs from St. Louis Blues, Let's Face the Music!, The Touch of Your Lips, More Cole Español, Ramblin' Rose, Dear Lonely Hearts, Where Did Everyone Go?, I Don't Want to Be Hurt Anymore, and the posthumously released Looking Back. Nat Cole's career may be divided into three fairly distinct stylistic phases. First came the jazz years during which as a busy sideman and leader of the King Cole Trio he proved to be one of the most awesomely gifted modern pianists of his generation. Cole's middle period encompasses the gradual shifting of emphasis from his pianistic prowess to that disarmingly pleasant singing voice. The pinnacle of this period, and one of the best albums he ever made, was Capitol's After Midnight Session, wherein his voice and piano are equally featured along with some of the greatest mainstream jazz soloists of the day. Cole's final period, a pop plateau of staggering dimensions that overlaps with the previous phase, has now been carefully mapped by Collector's Choice Music with a series of CD compilations each containing two LP's worth of material and with this humongous edifice containing all of his latter-day pop albums. ~ arwulf arwulf, All Music Guide
