Album Review
This is a pretty neat CD conversion of a superb compilation album, devoted to the best of the Glenn Miller recordings featuring vocalist Marion Hutton. The singer never got much respect in critiques of the band across the years but, as revealed here, she had an effective if not compelling swing style, on her own or paired with Tex Beneke. The original LP was a great idea for an album, and the Japanese CD reissue is even better, done up in 20-bit digital audio with K2 mastering, the result being a close, loud, crisp sound that is distinctly modern in texture at times -- the drums are still a bit muted by contemporary standards, but you do get more detail even on the percussion than one would expect from this nearly seven-decade-old material. Some of the tracks still have noise, and "I Guess I'll Have to Change My Plans" seems muted compared with what's around it, but the playing is always heard to advantage even where source imperfections exist, and most of 16 tracks here (which include many songs that are less often heard, such as "Daddy," "Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree," "A Tisket A-Tasket," and "The Chestnut Tree") are in superb fidelity. ~ Bruce Eder, All Music Guide
