Album Review
Although most of these 21 tracks were recorded some 50 years ago, the vocal genius of Ella Fitzgerald keeps them from ever feeling dated. There's just so much to like here, including Fitzgerald's classic take on Cole Porter's "I Get a Kick Out of You," a historic duet with Louis Armstrong on the Gershwins' "Summertime," and a stunning rendition of "Cry Me a River" backed by the London Symphony Orchestra. Two 21st century remixes close things out, one of which, Layo & Bushwacka!'s spooky and atmospheric stab at "Angel Eyes," is simply fascinating, with Fitzgerald's voice emerging out of the echoes and haze like a ghostly angel. A wonderful and carefully assembled introduction to one of the greatest voices in jazz and pop history. ~ Steve Leggett, All Music Guide
