Freaky Funky

"Japanese fun popsters the Zoobombs return for this, their third album, more studio refined and layered than previous outings. Where 'Welcome Back Zoobombs!' (No.2) saw the 'Bombs in virtual live mode, 'Bomb Freak Express' sees more keyboards, definitely more funk, and a whole lot of fun. Singer and guitarist Don Matsuo alternates between Japanese and English (rapping!). Think lotsa' fun Japanese bands - eg Shonen Knife, Ciba Matto - with a bit more Blues Explosion rock and roll relevance thrown into the mix. Opener is a cover of Miles Davis' 'Black Satin; elsewhere, 'Belt Out Rock and Roll' is the sound of your best beach party, ever, while 'Fun Fun Fun Key Key Key' comes over like a mutation of the Chilli Peppers and some kind of Pokemon thingy. Closer 'Baby's in a Rainbow' is ultra-cute synth pop featuring keyboardist Matta. As their press says, "highly concentrated rhythm, super-fat bass play, the funky and cut keyboard play, Don Matsuo's strong and explosive guitar play and his unique way of singing ... all mixture bring Zoobombs it's wild and lively sound." Indeed. Great fun."

"There's more amazing energy on this album. 'Tighten Rap' is simply their best number to date ... impossibly fast ... impossibly funky. If you've discovered the Zoobombs, you shouldn't miss this tune, or the rest of the album."
