CD Reviews

Dealing the Death Card
Rick Z. | Australia | 10/30/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I saw them live in Melbourne in a really dark, dive of a hotel and !@#$$$%^ loved them! My ears rang for two days afterwards! They sound just as good, if not better on stage as in the studio and that's quite an accomplishment. Sure, long time fans have mentioned that they sound less 'swampy' from their earlier recordings, but which band hasn't refined their sound over the evolution of their recording history? They would be the first to say that no one should take this genre too seriously, it's about drinkin, rockin' and havin' your ears ring for days afterwards!! More power to them and screw commercial media if they can't handle the various 'billy' genres!

Stay sick!"
As good, or dare I say better, than ZGT's first LP

(4 out of 5 stars)

"Upon fully listening to Glad Rags I didn't think ZGT could top themselves, I was wrong. Dealing the Death Card is definitely as good as Rags, but is it better? In Glad Rags I admit there were some songs that dragged on too far, such as Alone-and You're My Baby, but in Dealing the Death Card this isn't as much an issue. All in all there is only one song that is quite questionable, Long Dark Night. Long Dark Night sounds like the selling out of Tiger Army. People will view this in two ways: a nice old country-ish song, or an emobilly song; me fitting in with the first. All in all it's safe to say this second LP by ZGT is easily AS good as Glad Rags, if not better."
A horrible turn for a good psychobilly band

(2 out of 5 stars)

"After seeing ZGT in concert I was quite impressed and bought a copy of Monster Formal Wear and Glad Rags and Body Bags, and absolutely loved these albums. I was looking forward to this next release from the band, but when I got my copy I was completely disappointed.

I soon discovered everything that was good about their early albums was discarded in favor of a stripped down power chord approach. Dealing the Death Card and Mystery Woman are the only good songs on the album in my opinion, I've deleted the rest from my hard drive and won't be listening to the album in it's entirety any time soon.

The lyrics have quickly become stale and their approach has become narrowed and boring. The only reason I gave this album two stars instead of one is because of the brilliance of the two redeeming tracks I mentioned above."
