Synopsis

Album Description
Born in Dresden in 1927 but reared in Argentina, Michael Gielen began in the 1950s to gain a reputation as a conductor of both the Viennese classics and contemporary music. Besides his many outstanding conducting assignments in Europe, Michael Gielen until recently was music director of the Cincinnati Symphony. The main aim of the SWF Symphony Orchestra since its foundation in 1946 has been to increase audience awareness not only of the symphonic repertoire of the past two centuries, but also of the music of the twentieth century.

CD Reviews

Recommended with reservations.
Thomas Martin | USA | 09/30/2006
(4 out of 5 stars)

"I was drawn to this CD by the comparison of the work to Mahler, its Berg discmates, and the conducting of Michael Gielen. Arte Nova produces some wonderful CDs, but not to include the text of the poems (or even a synopsis) cripples my appreciation of the score. I understand this a 'budget' label, but this is going a bit too far!"
A perfect collection but poor packaging

"I agree fully with Thomas Martin. There is simply no excuse for NOT including the libretti of the Zemlinsky and Berg songs. A few extra pennies to the cost would have made this an unrivalled disc. The combination of Zemlinsky's symphony/song cycle (1923), with Berg's 'response' (1925-26), and his very own cycle of orchestral songs (1912, Op. 4), are a perfect match.

The SWF Symphony Orchestra under Michael Gielen, and the soloists, James Johnson (baritone) and Vlatka Orsanic (soprano), are all superb, in a committed performance, and clearly recorded."
Simply gorgeous!

"Get this incredibly well-priced CD if you want to hear the most beautifully recorded and performed "Lyric Symphony" available. Gielen and his SWR orchestra have already established themselves as world-class musicians with recordings of Brahms, Bruckner, Mahler, Bartok, Stravinsky, and of many other composers. Here they continue their mastery with performances unsurpassed in ensemble precision, musicality and beauty of sound.

The recorded sound, as always from this source, is demonstration quality.

[Having other recordings of the Zemlinsky symphony and Berg songs, I was not bothered by the omission of the text inside the booklet. The performances more than compensate for this. There are many sources on the web where one can get the texts for free.]"
