Yo Yo "Iz Still All Good" when making a comeback
02/06/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Yo Yo first came out with "Make Way For The Motherlode." This disc told women to stand up for your rights. Her next "Black Pearl" was still about standing up, and had some lovely samples, which made me enjoy that disc. After that, "You Beter Ask Somebody" showed that Yo Yo still can rap like any artist, and it showed her lyrical skills on the Westcoast vibe. After that she had control of her next disc, "Total Control" which came out with the successful "Same Old Thang (Everyday)" and the second part of "The Bonnie and Clyde Theme" which was a very popular single. Now, she has returned and has once more, be what she is. One of the best female rappers to come around."
A commercial, more enjoyable record than her previous...

"1. Intro

Nice intro, same as "Steady Risin" off "Total Control".

2. Countin' Money - (featuring Lil' Shawn)

Alright track, could do without.

3. Do You Wanna Ride? - (featuring Kelly Price/Missy Elliott)

Nice 2nd single, samples Pebbles' "Mercedes Boy". Although it states Missy Elliott on the track, she doesn't have a rap in it.

4. Is It All Still Good - (featuring Gerald Levert)

Excellent throwback track, Yo Yo nicely changes Biggie's lyrics to suit her own life, giving her fans more insight into her world.

5. Get Up (And Do Your Thing)

Party track, good but not great.

6. Never Gonna Fall Again

Another great track, nice lyrics.

7. Fantasy - (featuring Lil' Shawn)

Standout track, one of her freakiest records to date. Sexy, blunt & just amazing.

8. Let Me Be The One

Nice R&B-flavored track, samples Intro's "Let Me Be The One".

9. Good Girl

Interesting party track, talks about her life.

10. I Would If I Could - (featuring Missy Elliott)

Nice collabo, not one of Missy's best productions. Maybe change the instrumental?

11. Pass It On (Part II) - (featuring Big Chan/Nic-Nak/Shorty G/Lady T)

Loved Part I (off her "You Better Ask Somebody" album), and this track doesn't cut it. Just like "The Bonnie & Clyde Theme II" tried to continue the success of Part I (also from "You Better Ask Somebody" album), that also captured that chemistry, while this sequel to "Pass It On" seems off.

Overall, a nice commercial album, even more so than "Total Control", which was heavy on R&B and G-Funk. Yo Yo needs to go back to her more powerful-lyrical days ("Make Way For The Motherlode" "Black Pearl" "You Better Ask Somebody"), instead of just talking about sex, parties and the usual rap cliches. If she could find a balance between these two types of albums she's making, then that's when she'll gain mainstream AND critical success.

"YO YO'S UNRELEASED CD TITLED EBONY IS A MIXTURE OF 80'S R&B AND PLENTY OF COLLABORATIONS SUCH AS MISSY ELLIOT,KELLY PRICE AND GERALD LEVERT PLUS MORE GUEST APPEARANCES.TIGHT DANCEABLE,PARTY TRACKS WORTH LISTENING,DANCIN,AND GROOVEN TOO. THE SAMPLES ARE GOOD BUT COULD BE BETTER. IT SHOULD'VE BEEN REWORK AND DONE BUT STILL SHOULD'VE RELEASED. THE ALBUM DEFINITELY HAS TRACKS THAT YOU CAN PUMP IN THE CAR,CLUB AND DANCE AT A PARTY. THE SUMMER OF '98 WAS THE PERFECT RELEASED DATE BUT THE EBONY ALBUM/CD WASN'T RELEASED AT ALL AND WON'T EVER GET RELEASED TOO BADD!"
