As a musician, as a man of ideals, and as a true world citizen, Yehudi Menuhin made an extraordinary mark on his era. The Menuhin Century commemorates the 100th anniversary of his birth on 22 April 1916.These recordings depict Menuhin as a maker of musical history and place him in the context of momentous historical events. The Historic Recordings includes Menuhin's collaborations with such figures as Sir Edward Elgar, Wilhelm Furtwängler, Sir John Barbirolli, Charles Munch and David Oistrakh, and features recordings made in Moscow in 1945 and in Budapest during the Hungarian Uprising of 1956. CD1: The collection opens with the landmark 1932 recording of the Elgar Violin Concerto that the 16-year-old violinist made at the new Abbey Road studios, with the composer himself conducting. This is complemented by a previously unpublished recording of 'La Capricieuse'. CDs 2-3: Menuhin lays his claim to immortality with his pioneering recording of the complete Bach Sonatas and Partitas (1934-1936). CDs 4-6: The young violinist?s encounter with his mentor George Enescu, one of the major musical figures of the time. These 3 CDs consist of their complete recordings together. CD7: War and peace. Menuhin snatched the recently rediscovered Schumann concerto ? which he described as the ?missing link of the violin literature? ? from under the Nazis? noses. Then, in October 1944, just two months after the Liberation of Paris, he re-opened the Paris Opéra with Charles Munch, playing the Marseillaise and an extract from the Mendelssohn concerto, a work that had been forbidden during the Occupation. The entire radio broadcast of this emotion-laden concert is to be heard on this disc. CD8: Menuhin in Moscow. Following an historic performance of Bach?s Double Concerto with another violin genius and close friend, David Oistrakh, comes an extraordinary recital in where he plays Nigun from Bloch?s Baal Shem ? the piece was censored by Soviet radio.
