CD Reviews

Average, but not outstanding Y&T album
Justin Gaines | Northern Virginia | 06/01/2006
(3 out of 5 stars)

"You have to give Y&T credit for releasing a new studio album at a time when the musical climate wasn't exactly friendly towards Y&T's particular brand of hard rock. Still, 1996's Musically Incorrect wasn't quite up to the standard set by earlier Y&T albums.

Fortunately the band didn't look at the popular alternative bands and say "We can do that", but it did seem like they went out of their way to distance themselves from any kind of hair metal comparisons. I suppose that's understandable, given how unpopular that kind of music was at the time, but the end result is that Musically Incorrect lacks the atmosphere and sense of fun that other Y&T albums had. I'm not necessarily looking for Summertime Girls Part II, but I think the album might be a bit too serious for its own good.

Overall, Musically Incorrect is a solid hard rock album. It has some good songs, but nothing on par with what you'd find on Mean Streak or Black Tiger. It may not live up to die-hard Y&T fans' expectations, but an average Y&T album is still going to be better than most bands' best work.
