Synopsis

Album Description
You hold your breath. Out of the silence comes the singular voice of Jingle Girl: "W-a-a-y ... down in a town called Music City, there's a couple of fellas who can sing real pretty, and you can't miss ?em ?cause one of ?em wears a dress!" The crowd screams "Hey, Y'all!" as James Dean Jay Byrd and Steven Cheslik-DeMeyer, better known as Y'all, come bounding out for their opening song. A little bit "Sonny & Cher" and a little bit "Hee Haw," it's a whole lot of something you've never seen before. It's "Hey, Y'all!" The "Hey, Y'all!" Soundtrack is the "soundtrack" of Y'all's dream - a TV variety show. It's partly a concept album: you can see it as tongue-in-cheek humor, a soundtrack for a show that doesn't exist. Or you can see it as a demonstration of what a Y'all TV variety show would sound like. In both cases, you'd be right. It's both. The style of the recording, the song selection and arrangements, and the packaging and marketing are all tailored to look and sound as if "Hey, Y'all!," a TV variety show hosted by Y'all, really does exist and this CD is its soundtrack. Y'all is cutting edge. It's what you remember. It's what you never imagined. Hey, Y'all contains a batch of new Y'all originals, a peppy take on Johnny Cash's "I Walk the Line," and Tom Paxton's "The Last Thing on My Mind." Y'all were joined in the studio by a host of Nashville notables: bluegrass legend Roland White, Andrew Hardin from Tom Russell's band, Merle Haggard's guitar player, Redd Volkaert, and the inimitable Kristi Rose singing the part of Jingle Girl.

(5 out of 5 stars)

""Way down in a town called Music City/ there's a couple of fellas who can sing real pretty/ and you can't miss 'em 'cause one of 'em wears a dress..." So begins one of my favorite albums. One part Minnie Pearl, two parts fabulous music, with a dash of harmonic bliss and a well-blended tablespoon of ingenuity, The "Hey Y'all!" Soundtrack manages to be hilarious, poignant, and just damn good music. The boys of Y'all, Jay Byrd and Steven, gain their country cred with their excellent cover of Johnny Cash's "I Walk the Line," but proceed to show the world their own creativity and hilarity with such tunes as "My Mama Likes the Feel of Cottage Cheese" and "I'm Calling Your Name." Like any good variety show, they cover all the bases: sad songs, happy songs, jokes, and everything else you could possibly want. So give it a try, visit that strange land of Y'all, and send me a postcard when you decide you never want to come home."
