More tan pastiche

"Before I came to live in Spain, I had never heard of Xavier Montsalvatge, I had only recently come across the music of Frederic Mompou. The reason why I mention the two together is because I see them both as representatives of a style. It's a style that mixes influences into a cocktail of surprises. With Mompou the influence is Chopin, folk song and popular music. In the case of Montsalvatge, it's Stravinsky and Prokofiev plus a little surrealism and modernism alongside the popular idiom that makes the mix. But Monsalvatge's piano music is more than pastiche. It bears repeated listening. These performances are sympathetic without being revelatory, thoroughly competent without being particularly virtuosic. But recommended."
