Wanda Jackson remains very active on the touring circuit, having found a following among younger audiences who sense her rebel spirit. While most collections focus on her rockabilly years it is about time we get a solid collection of some of the best country song for those who can't afford the Bear Family collections. I don't feel the need to review the music since most people who are looking at this import collection are probably familiar with her work and her sound. But if you don't and have been curious about her and her contributions to country music this would be a great collection to start with. Her songs range from classic country to some of her fun story songs. My favorites include Big Iron Skillet and The Box it Came In, good revenge songs. Besides the Bear collection I don't think most of these songs have been issued on CD. This package is well worth the money full of 30 songs, as many as they could cram into a single disc. The book contains a fun and educational essay about her successes and failures on the country charts and her career in general. Also contains a lot of vintage pictures including a promo shot for "this gun don't care who it shoots" where she is holding a gun over her shoulder. Two things I look for in a compilation is informative liner notes and a good number of songs, ACE has done a stellar job. Well worth the money for this collection." Missing Her Best D. Missing are the country greats: Happy Happy Birthday, Have You Ever Been Lonely, Making Believe, Lonely Weekends, Today I Started Loving You Again, Seven Lonely Days, Reckless Love Affair, The Box That It Came In, I Cried Again, These Empty Arms, Since I Met You Baby, You Win Again, etc...
With this many omissions, it can hardly be considered "The Very Best Of The Country years."" |
