One Man's Opinion: The Best CD of the 90's

"I have a rather short list of "beginning-to-end" albums; that is, albums that I can listen to from beginning to end without a single song letting me down. This album is near the top of my list, and as close to a perfect pop-rock album as one can hope to get. Every single track contained here could stand alone as a pop classic, it's simply that rich a record. This is to my mind, the best CD of the 1990's. Yes, Wallinger borrows liberally from his influences (the "oo-oooo" chorus in "Way Down Now" is a direct steal from the Stones' "Sympathy for the Devil"), but that doesn't diminish the genius of the songwriting. Echoes of the Beatles, Stones, Sly Stone, Van Morrison, among others, can be heard here. This is a rich, rocking, soulful, funky, recording. Do yourself a favor and add it to your collection. I, too, don't understand why it's only available as an import, but the DVD can only be a pleasant bonus. Buy it anyway."

"Hey, I'm 12 years old. You may think I'm some punk kid, but I'm not. My parents came across this album by chance, and I love it. EVERY song is absolutely great! A must-have for any rock music fan. Every song is different, but still extrordinary. Amazing. You HAVE to get this CD."

"Hey, I'm 50 years old, and I can listen to this great collection of timeless songs over, and over, and over again, and always be amazed at how good this man is and how fresh the music sounds. Its the only music I even remember from the 90's. If you have not listened, you are missing out."

The Band That Should Be King

"Number 12 on Dan's Top 25 - World Party: Goodbye Jumbo is a modern pop masterpiece which sounds FRESHER today than the day it was released. Does that sound trite? Maybe so, but in this case it's actual, factual: everything is satisfactual. The IMPORT (Seaview) version adds "higher resolution" on ordinary CD players. That's "Beverly Hillbillyspeak" for: them new fangled machines dun gone 'n made Cuz'n Karl a might better! Well, doggies!"* I are a coledge gradjeate but I ain't no audiomafile. Jed, the top end and (more importantly) the bottom end finally sounds "right." (I always wondered where the BASS was the first go 'round. Well, FOUND IT!) This was the CD which was supposed to break Karl Wallinger's one man studio, a big star. But like with Alex's "Big Star" -- it never happened. The songs were always great from start to finish, but NOW, you not only get better sound, you get something even cooler: three bonus videos. Peter Gabriel ostensibly redid his entire catalogue because he didn't like the mix of the Fripp produced Self Titled CD AKA II AKA Scratch AKA (the one, unless you're a Gabriel nut, you look at and say HUH)? Only the L.E. LP type CD versions give you some bang for the buck. Not so, with England's lost son, Karl. Mr. Wallinger provides videos in all the World Party reissues. Get 'em (clearing throat) whilst one still is able. * All Hail BH! RIP. Buddy Ebsen, we hardly knew ye! Sob."

"Even though my favorite "World Party" song is "Is It Like Today", this is the album I like most. Overall just a great listen. The most well known song here is "Put The Message In A Box", which is incredibly catchy, and I believe "Way Down Now" was a minor hit as well. This band (or guy) has numerous obvious influences, but I think sounds most like "The Jayhawks" to me. I can't understand why all these albums are import only, I guess they're low sellers. It would be nice if "World Party" released a collection sometime too."
