Synopsis

On Something/Everything, Wolf Colonel's humbly disingenuous and often hilarious singer-songwriter Jason Anderson asks: "Don?t you think we should kiss while the Hüsker Dü is playing?" What?s a girl to say? Anderson tops it off with the wry but earnest "Sophomore," melodious yet overlaid with fuzz. This chuckle-inducing knee-slapper lovingly portrays--and captures the mood of--a confused co-ed: "She threw away all her bras / Started listening to Was Not Was / The second album is her favorite / A double single in the dormitory--yeah!" Jangly and trebly, "Thinking About You" is another selection with wicked yet endearing lyrics. The album, however, is not all wonderfully sappy and infectious folk-pop full of infectious hooks. K Records prodigy Phil Elvrum (the Microphones, D+) produced parts of Something/Everything, and his influence is felt during introspective moments where a harp-like nylon-stringed, acoustic guitar is in evidence ("From Wisconsin:). Like the Microphones, Wolf Colonel play with varied genres, including post-rock ("That's My Life"), break beats ("Citizen's Arrest"), and lo-fi ("Break the News"). This romantic noise-pop experiment is fun and very, very sweet. --Jillian Steinberger
