CD Reviews

Hopelessly Misunderstood
David Johnson | 11/24/2006
(2 out of 5 stars)

"The problem with this - and any Winger 'best of' package is that the folks compiling it don't understand anything about Winger beyond what they saw on MTV in the late 80's. Therefore, anyone hoping for a good overview of Winger's material will walk away with half the picture.

In reality there are two Winger's. The pretty boy, pop-cliche, glam-metal outfit represented on this collection, and the sensible, seasoned song-craftsmen represented by the deep albums cuts that never saw radio or video.

Winger is known primarily as the former, by songs such as 'Seventeen', 'Headed For a Heartbreak', and 'Miles Away'. True fans wish someone would release a collection including 'Heart of the Young', 'Rainbow in the Rose' (from Heart of the Young), 'Emergency' or 'Surrender' from the debut, and virtually anything from the masterpiece 'Pull' album - only represented here by one song ('Spell I'm Under' - arguably the weak link on that album).

Save your money and get a copy of 'Pull' or 'Down Incognito' to truly understand the great songwriting and talent of Kip, Reb, Rod, and Paul - skip these songs that you've heard a million times on Monster Ballad CD's. Better yet, get the new Winger IV, or Kip's solo stuff ('This Conversation Seems Like a Dream' and 'Songs from the Ocean Floor')."
