And for the most part, he succeeds; on "Outskirts of Town," "Bad People," and "Stone Crazy World," he sounds like he's having the time of his life. This isn't any super-milkshake-smooth soul, either; the author of "In the Midnight Hour" and "Mustang Sally" sounds more like a double shot of J.D., straight up. Still, Pickett knows that he's of a vanishing breed: the soul singers who were actually performing in the 1960s.
