Willie Rosario - Infinito
Antonio Delgado. ?El Salsero? | Baltimore, MD USA | 05/24/2010
(4 out of 5 stars)

"What we have here is a hidden treasure dating back to 1973 with a silky smooth authentic old school sabor (flavor), which in my opinion was ahead of its time. The release of "Infinito" in 1973, marked Willie Rosario's (aka Mr. Afinque and `El Rey del Ritmo' (`King of Rhythm')) eighth album, his first LP, "Cha Cha Cha", he recorded with Johnnie Sguí dates all the way back to 1956. Infinito introduces the creative and versatile sonero (a lead singer with the ability to improvise between repeating choruses known as montunos.) José `Junior' Toledo, who replaced Chamaco Ramirez when Rosario relocated from La Gran Manzana (The Big Apple) to Puerto Rico. Put the CD in, sit back, and enjoy the very first song "Arrepentios Pecadores", which is one of the few that Willie Rosario wrote entirely himself on this album; and believe me, it is off the cadenas (off the chains)! You'll especially enjoy the dazzling conga solo by Papo Pepin. "Echame La Culmpa A Mi" will make you want to stop what you're doing and throw your very own Salsa Block Party. Wow! Another great salsa is "Juventud Siglo 20" ("20th Century Youth's") where you can witness `Toledo's' demonstrated ability as a sonero. If you still have lingering reservations about Toledo's inventiveness then check out "Soy Rumbero", "Ajiaco Caliente" and "Amigo De Que." In a refreshing change of pace there are also two lovely boleros on this album, "Todo y Nada" and "Lagrimas y Tristeza." It doesn't get any more authentic than this mi gente! Willie Rosario has often stated said that Infinito is by far his favorite album, which speaks volumes about this recording, especially coming from a man whose musical career spans over 50 years. I highly recommend this making Infinto a valuable addition to your ever growing salsa library.
