CD Reviews

A great, swingin' disc
Allan MacInnis | Vancouver | 08/16/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I generally like free jazz and other forms of improvised music, and that's how I came to be a William Parker fan; I can also appreciate really cooking jazz, tho', and it's on that level that this disc is a truly delightful surprise. It's tuneful, playful, bluesy, urban, inventive, expressive, and really not noisy or difficult at all -- if you've ever been scared by the occasional noisiness of Mr. Parker's music, rest assured that this is a great session that will have you tapping your foot a lot and cringing in the corner not at all. Everyone in the trio is in great form and playing off each other gleefully, and tho' I sometimes find trio formats a little too spartan -- in this case, not at all; it's a perfect showcase for three supremely talented musicians. Great music to walk around to, as well -- I second everything the other reviewer has to say (John C. Graham)."
Anything by Parker is good.

"I own 5 cd's by William Parker as a leader, and each is unique. Parker rarely repeats himself, and his sound and compositions are always captivating. Here he teams with veteran clarinettist Perry Robinson. Robinson's style defies any stylistic definition - I find his playing to resemble Pee Wee Russell more than anything. I am not always crazy about his sound - although it is very personal and original. His playing made me give this CD 4 instead of the regular 5 stars usually reserved for William Parker - a true leader in modern music. If you already have Oniel's Porch, Painter's Spring, and Fractured Dimensions - t is time for Bob's Pink cadillac."

"

This one was quite a surprise. I just came back from a walk to the drug store. I took my portable cd player with me so I could really listen to the first cd in this set (70+min.)

Man, I was just strollin' along with it. William Parker really got that groove going with that bass. Walter Perkins keeps it nice and light, just the right touch, never overpowering. And this is easily the best thing I've heard from Perry Robinson. It's a brilliant showcase for everyone here. And I gotta tell you how impressive the sound quality is.

I was boppin along to and from that drugstore, oblivious to everything except the sounds coming from my headphones. Be smart. Get this one before it goes out of print. Its a keeper."
