These lovely and haunting works were composed for a couple of lutes, and four members of the viol and violin family. Lawes's music differs from that of his contemporaries in being more harmonically daring, and consequently more varied in emotional expression. These compositions, written around 1630, conjure and incomparably rich, almost Romantic sound from the six instruments. Each suite follows the typical Baroque format: it consists of a series of dances, some of which are preceded by a "Fantasy" as a prelude. The performances captured on these two lovely discs are thoroughly expert. Lawes is a major voice in music of the period, and his work will repay your attention. --David Hurwitz

"This is just very fine music. Melancholy. Agitation. Inspiration. These are words that come to mind. William Lawes left before his time but, thankfully, he left behind some beautiful and intimate music. The purchase won't be cheap but it will be worth your dime."
