"Beautifully crafted singing throughout by the Choir of Magdalen College, Oxford under Bill Ives. The disc is presented with truly informative historical notes by Cambridge man David Skinner who prepared the editions sung here, and the chance to hear the rarely recorded Second Service is rewarded with a performance of historical proportions. The supple and gutsy tenor of Rogers Covey-Crump deserves special mention. His singing of Blessed is he that fears the Lord arises from a spiritual center and never relinquishes its rapture. It alone is worth the price of the disc. The viol consort accompaniment used is a unique extension of Byrd, but it works beautifully, and Skinner prepares the way admirably in extensive accompanying notes. Lovers of William Byrd's sumptuous music should not hesitate: a heady experience awaits."
