As a clarinetist, Jorg Widmann is respectful of musical traditions - but as a composer, he calls them into question in radical ways. In many of his pieces, traditional tonal elements encounter an arsenal of newly developed techniques and sounds. As a result, the relationship between the musical elements, whether historical or contemporary, is redefined. His five String Quartets, performed here by the Minguet Quartett, were written over an eight year period. They are independent pieces but can also be viewed as a large work in five movements.
