CD Reviews

First-Class Melodic Rock

(4 out of 5 stars)

"How a death and nu-metal factory like Roadrunner ever released this gem, I have no idea. Perhaps they thought it was the punk band with the same name? At any rate, Westworld is a melodic hard rock project featuring TNT vocalist Tony Harnell, Riot guitarist Mark Reale, and Danger Danger bassist Bruno Ravel. Given the players involved, you can pretty much guess the kind of music Westworld has to offer. This is first-class melodic hard rock album. The songs are catchy and have plenty of hooks, but Harnell's vocals really steal the show. His voice is as distinctive as ever, but it's not as high as it was on those early TNT albums. To my ears this is an improvement, as it makes the album that much more listenable.

TNT, Riot, and Danger Danger fans should eat this one up. It's one of the best modern AOR/melodic hard rock albums out there. Westworld's other albums, Skin and Cyberdreams are just as good, as is Tony Harnell's latest project Starbreaker.

While I wait for the next RIOT release....

"Being a RIOT fan since 1983 I bought this ablum just because Mark Reale was involved in it. Found out about the album at the RIOT website. Having read the reviews I wasn't expecting it to be RIOTish and so wasn't disappointed. Very 80s , very melodious. Now I need to get Skins. Meanwhile I'm looking forward to seeing Westworld perform live at Poughkeepsie NY."
