CD Reviews

Rave oriented volumes from 5 years-not much vocal
Daniel W. Kelly | Long Island, NY United States | 10/10/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"All 5 of the first discs from Webster Hall come to us at one lowe price in a boxed set. CD1 is filled with tribal beats & progressive house rhythms, but feels very dated at this point. CD2 is much more thumpin with a tech-house rave feeling. CD3 is more of the same, with some really big artists and remixers-this is definitely the most "hit" filled disc in the box. CD4 is strong slammin techno house riffs...vocals are non-existent for the most part, most noticeably in a cover of the 1980s new wave classic "Send Me An Angel", which, while pretty, is rather dull and hard to recognize in a non-vocal mix (there are vocal versions of this recording on other compilations). CD5 is where you find the most peak hour vocal anthems. There are some hard to get gems on here like Veronica's "open", mixed by Johnny Vicious, and "distant places" by Marsha of Ian van Dahl, and they are both fairly long cuts-I just wish Ben Shaw's "So strong" had been longer, since that's hard to come by on CD. The disc even ends with a pounding track that borrows melody and riff from Lisa Lisa's "Let the Beat Hit Em."

The only real complaint about this disc is the lack of liner notes-You get no information on who did any of the remixes, the year of the songs, etc. But, for the price, this 5 disc set (along with a free DVD of the "Wet and wild women of Webster Hall", in case into that "home movies at a club" nonsense), is worth the price.
