CD Reviews

No Hit Wonder
Russell Thomas | Hampton, VA USA | 05/22/2003
(3 out of 5 stars)

"In the summer of 1989, the U.K. band called Waterfront released the single "Cry" off their debut album (it was the only single released from the album).Though only Chris Duffy (vocals) and Phil Cilia (guitars)were the band known as Waterfront, the band also included Chris Childs (bass) and Greg Haver (drums). The best tracks on this disc are "Tightrope" , "Cry", "Nature of Love", and "Broken Arrow". Relying heavily on electronic keyboards and some great saxophone work, Waterfront is typical 80's fair, perhaps too typical to gain any real attention at the time. Shades of Wham! and a bit of Spandau Ballet seem to come to my mind when I listen to this compact disc. If you like British 80's pop music, you might be pleasantly surprised with this obscure album."
Good enough to make it a memorable album!

"Waterfront has a mainstream, yet quirky style to their pop music. Perhaps that is why they did not make it very big on the charts. "Cry" went up to as far as No.#10 on the American Top 40. They were briefly coverboys on Brit pop magazines, eye candy for girls to gawk at. Then quietly, they faded off from limelight. But the album they left is a small chest of pop gems like "Tightrope" and "Broken Arrow". Waterfront made small but indelible impressions in blending smoothie vocals with sensible catchy beats."
