CD Reviews

A Shining Light Among The Extreme
Twitch | Atlanta, GA | 11/09/2004
(4 out of 5 stars)

"The metalcore trend has become rather stale over the past few years, slowly become the "nu-metal" of the new millenium. While these bands fail in creating something original or even noteworthy out of a little thing called "hardcore", Watchmaker have given birth to one of the most original and extreme albums of the 21st century. Don't get me wrond here, I am in no way calling Watchmaker a metalcore band, far from it, but that is in reference to the obvious hardcore basis of the band. The riff structure is not pretenciously technically, nor can they be called simple and the drumming is presise and mechanical (though this is not meant in a bad way, drummer Michael Garret is a human clock), not to mention for an album such as this, Garret doesn't let the music blast beat into the ground. Vocally, this album is vicious; Brian Livoti's totured screams more resemble Nocturno Culto (Darkthrone) than anything that can be called hardcore. That is another thing about this album, the album dives into such a brutal and heavy atmosphere that it could easily pass as a black metal record (though slightly more musical). Maybe that is what I find so appealing about 'Kill.Crush.Destroy'. The lyrics are a plus, well thought out and well written; they really compliment the music in a posititve manner (just look at "Gunscope Transplant" and "Flowers of Evil"). This album is full of the viscreal force that most extreme metal acts lack in this day and age and definitely plants Watchmaker at the top of their genre. This album does in fact kill, crush, and destroy."
