CD Reviews

WICKED WASPS WHAT AN ALBUM!
Tommy Fields | spain | 04/12/2004
(5 out of 5 stars)

"The first thing that hits you when you play this album is that although The Wasps history is steeped in "punk" they write songs that are so catchy that its hard to beleive that some of the newer guitar bands haven't picked up on it and covered some of these Wasps songs because potentially there are about half a dozen massive hit songs on this album just waiting to happen.Leaving aside for the moment the punk/powerpop genius of this band there is also a dark side to their music "Evil Man" for example has lyrics and a bass line that made the hairs stand up on the back of my neck .On "Something to tell you" which deals with the "blank" generation , lead singer Jesse Lynn-Dean tells us "do a murder, rob a bank but don't just sit there dumb and blank, propaganda dirty tricks they feed you crap they make you sick".Great political awareness on "Another song about dancing "and again displaying yet another side to the band. All in all maybe "The Wasps" had too much too soon in The Wasps I can hear Ramones, Buzzcocks, Pistols, Iggy, Ziggy and even Television and Talking Heads but above all they remain themselves. The Wasps already have released two singles that acheived "cult" recognition "Teenage Treats" & "Can't wait till 78 and I think this album deserves the same distinction."

"My old band actually covered Teenage Treats back in our day. Possibly the most fun I have ever had playing the bass. I blame my current carpal tunnel on playing that song drunk too many times."
