Good-of-Kind, and Intermittently Inspired

"I had this LP in college when it surfaced, and it certainly shows some age in lapses of rhetoric, but that is part of it's appeal. Music and words never quite fuse, but I don't think that was Wanda's intention, anyhow. What she does do is conjure great dramas with verse, and here and there a small jazz ensemble plays along to good effect. The standout - and for my money worth the price of admission - is the first track called "The Meeting Place", which finds the poet as observer in a Stygian downtown bar chronicling the obfuscatory gestures of its patrons ("two men sit at a bar, discussing stereo component sets/ and Sam just loves stereo component sets") and making poignant conclusions ("A lie is only a lie if you believe it/and some people will believe anything/if it's convenient.").Culture doesn't produce moments like these much anymore, so it's a valuable document of a bygone age, an age when we actually listened, and were not - it seems - so anxious to jam something/ anything into the our empty spaces to keep from being alone with ourselves, when music and words took time to move us, instead of presenting the assault we must feel we deserve."

"A lover of mine pulled my coat about this one. And while Wanda Robinson may be as new to you as she was to me, I've been knowing her as Laini Mataka for years. I've read most her poetry published by Black Classic Press outta Baltimore, MD since the 90s.

So when I heard that she had recorded some albums in the 70s I immediately ordered. Glad I did. Beautiful words with lovely music. I ain't no music critic or even grammatically correct, but this is one of those rare finds you just have tell everyone about. So snatch this one up - now. While you have the cash, before you forget.

And if you have some more cash laying around, grab up Arthur Prysock's classic * This is My Beloved* and put these two on the CD player in tandem, turn on the red light, put some fire to a Kush incense, light some candles, then lay down with - well - whomever... just make sure you have some condoms and KY handy. Then if you have the energy, sit back and listen to Wanda's words real close and just enjoy her flow..."
