Album DescriptionWhen Wampeters made Hey Judas, David Geffen was not on the premises. Nor was Don Was. Hey Judas was a seat-of-the-pants effort, an indie product. There were no ads in Spin, no MTV promos, no choreographed buzz. There were no tours opening for Liz Phair or Semisonic, no appearances on Conan O'Brien, no see-it-when-you-walk-in-the-door displays at Tower Records. Freedom from "the business" brought with it the prospect of obscurity. But there was a multitrack digital tape deck, a NAFTA-sheltered Canadian CD manufacturing plant, and a Web site. There was creative freedom. Nobody was watching the clock as the CD grew. Built from the ground up, Hey Judas is indie music before indie went mainstream.
