Windgassen in his earlier days as Tannhauer is triumphant!
D. J. Edwards | Cheshire, CT United States | 03/29/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"An exciting evening at Bayreuth with not a weak link in the cast although personally I would want a more refulgent Venus. Windgasen's Roman narrative is intense and deeply anguished. I've heard no better. The sound hurts the orchetra which is too bad because when it comes through it is brilliant. What a rewarding evening that must have been for those lucky to have been attending this performance. Fischer-Deskau, who is not always my favorite singer, is superb in his ode to the evening star. I hav e always thught that he was over parted in many roles that he recorded, his Die Meistersinger being one of them. Brouwenstijn is always in top form and is shamefully underestimated and underappreciated, from her Seiglinde with Leinsdorf to her Elizabeth in Don Carlo. Andthe poorly recorded orchestra detracts nothing from the briliance the of this performance. Worth the price and rewardingly thrilling in every way. Gramophone raved over it and with reason."
