CD Reviews

Mass murder music

"This album is so angry it feels as though it was written by a serial killer. It oozes malice and hate. I feel the need to take a shower or pet my dog or buy my girlfriend some flowers in an attempt to offset the negative vibes put out by this album. That said, the songwriting is pure genius. To be able to elicit such strong emotion in this day and age with music and words is a fantastic achievement. Blackie Lawless has shown flashes of expert craftmanship in the past but this album moves into the realm of distorted art. Further bolstering the heavy malice of this album is the presence of another talented degenerate and Blackie's sometime partner in crime, Chris Holmes.

"I just recently saw W.A.S.P live for the first time. They are an incredible live band. Blackie is amazing! I have been away from this band for a long time but seeing them live has re-sparked my interest. I bought K.F.D based on seeing them play "Kill Your Pretty Face" live. It was the best song of the night and I just had to have the CD. Well the album version does not have the same power or quality of the live version and I think that would pretty much be the case for every song on this album.

Make no mistake about it, WASP IS Blackie Lawless. He has one of the most distinct and powerful voices in music and he has a knack for writing powerful and catchy heavy metal anthems that make you want to stand up, sing along, and pump your fist in the air. This album is not that, and that would be okay. But the problem I have with K.F.D is that for almost all of the album Blackie's vocals take a backseat and so does Chris Holmes' guitar. There is some kind of annoying distortion sound throughout pretty much every song. It's loud, not really musical, and serves no purpose other than to drown out what should be the good parts of the music. If this wasn't WASP I'd say that they recorded it like this to hide their insufficiencies. This album was touted as Chis Holmes big comeback to the band yet they recorded an album that doesn't showcase a whole lotta guitar work and really wouldn't make any difference who played guitar on it. Even if Chis Holmes wrote all the songs, it still wouldn't showcase his ability as a writer cause for the most part you can't understand the singing. Why take one of the all time best voices in metal and drown it out? The one instrument that does REALLY stand out is the drums and they're not really all that good. Also in some of the songs they do this kind of "menacing" monologue thing which just comes of as very cheesy.

I think if they had spent more time on this album and just stuck to basics it would have been a good one. Stick WITH your strengths, don't bury them. Next I think I'm gonna have to buy the album with the live version of "Kill Your Pretty Face" on it and hope it's what I'm looking for!

"I'm 44:

I saw Blackie Lawless and W.A.S.P. back when they opened for Iron Maiden on the (I it was Live After Death World Tour 1988/89 = 50,000 WATTS OF POWER) in Dallas Texas and I have to say I was blown away about 3 quarters through that concert when Blackie started twirling his head and hair around and his head looked like it was on a pivot and then he drank the fake mixed blood from the upside down skull and so you talk about showmanship, there was nothing that could compare to that except maybe the 50,000+ Watts of pure adreneline that Maiden brought out after that, I still remember the 40 foot tall Eddie that rose up behind Nicko McBrain that had sparking eyeballs (I still wish they'd release that show on DVD because I'd love to own those 2 shows on that same night.

I own Blackie Lawless' Neon God's Cd's and still listen to them every so often. Brilliant Works!!!"
