Kevin Volans (b. 1949) is something of a South African polystylist, but he takes a great deal from minimalism, mostly in the way he textures his music. This is How It Is (1996) is for wind ensemble and has occasional Stravinsky-like clashes. The magical Walking Song (1996) is for flute, harpsichord, and hand-clappers--again a Minimalist construction. Leaping Dance (1996) uses interlocking phase techniques that also incorporate African rhythms--very attractive. Concerto for Piano and Winds (1995) also uses African rhythms, but you won't be able to tell. Untitled (1996) is for piano solo and offstage wind ensemble. It's all quite good, very well played. --Paul Cook
