CD Reviews

The Best of Voice of the Beehive is a great cd
12/14/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I had forgotten about this band from the 80's and saw them recently on VH1 Classics. I ordered this cd and it is awesome. It's been along time since I have listened to a cd from the beginning to end. They have a great sense of humor that you don't hear in todays music. Theres a Barbarian in the Back of my car is a classic. Reminds me of being an 80's teenager. Monsters and Angels and I say Nothing are my favorites. Definitely try this cd. For the price you can't go wrong."

"Exsqueeze me? No "Scary Kisses" -- one of the best VotB songs ever -- or anything else off _Sex & Misery_? I suspect evil record-company shenanigans, but whatever the cause, it really can't be definitive without even the tiniest nod to that album.

Plus one star for the inclusion of "Say It," a fun little track from _Honey Lingers_ that I wouldn't have expected to see on a best-of. And you do get most of the classics. In fact, this is probably 80% of the way to being all the VotB you'll ever need. Still, 80% only gets four stars."

"GET this album!! The songwriting quality on this is way impressive!

Excellent, heartfelt feminine lyrics laid onto kickin danceable tunes. Very, very strong band and precise, professional production.

If you like B-52's, Go-Go's, Cyndi Lauper, etc. you'll love Beehive!

This is one of those albums that grows on you--buy it for one song, but end up with 6-8 cherished and little-known gems. "Adonis Blue" has one of the most massive beats of the 90's; "Say It", "I Say Nothing", "Just Like You" and "Trust Me" rock; "Perfect Place" is sweet and thoughtful, and "Beauty to My Eyes" is honey right from the Beehive.

These girls would probably have ruled the world except for a tiny fatal flaw in their style: they always want to STOP the g-d song several times for a breathless "dramatic pause"--which DESTROYS it for club play, the (great!) dance grooves are broken in the middle leaving the poor folks on the floor with nothing for endless seconds! If only they didn't do that, three or four of these songs would have been smash hits.

That being said, many of these songs WERE top-100 singles, more in the U.K. and Australia than in the U.S., where only "I Say Nothing" and "Monsters and Angels" scored.

NOTE: As of this writing, the track listing shown on Amazon for this album is COMPLETELY wrong. There are 18 tracks on this collection!"
