Sir Edward Elgar's Concerto for Violin was completed in 1910, when European music, particularly concertos, were still heavily influenced by the great German composers of the 19th century--and it shows. The Violin Concerto is still a show-stopper, as in this recording with Pinchas Zukerman at the violin. The miking is close enough to provide the right balance of warmth and texture, even if the orchestra's sound is a bit flattened. Elgar's Salut D'amour began as an 1888 piano piece, and was later orchestrated. It's a student piece, and we can forgive its cloying sweetness. --Paul Cook
