CD Reviews

I waited for... a concept album?!?!
punkviper | Pittsburgh, PA USA | 02/01/2000

"Now don't get me wrong, I've loved the Vindictives since 1994, and I've been anxiously awaiting any new product they come out with. And I had high hopes for this disc, being the first new album in quite some time. And even after the first song, I said "This is great!" Then the facts started smacking me in the face: this is a concept album. An opera, a cohesive thought, a stream of consciousness idea. Now where the Vindictives, a snot-punk band to end all snot-punk bands, decided to come back with something like this is beyond me. Make no mistake, the few actual songs on this disc are classic Vindictives stuff with the same "to hell with what THEY think" ideas. But then there are Parts 1 thru 5 of ONE song! And the repetition idea gets beaten into your head after a while (yeah I know, "Hypno-Punko.") Then there are the answering machine messages by somebody's mom. Yeesh. So there it is. A handful of good songs surrounded by ridiculous "Parts," "Versions," and other filler. (Not to mention the 45 minute tape loop that ends the CD. Uggh!) Whatever the Vindictives as a band were trying to achieve here, I hope they're happy with it, because from a fan standpoint, it's a chore to listen to."
The punkest thing since the first ramones record

"This will never be recognized as one of the great punk records, but it should be. its the most truly inventive thing i've ever heard.devo + the ramones + crack = hypno-punko.joey and company do it again!"
A piece of sheer brilliance

"The Vindictives have done it again. As if anyone had any doubts, the latest offering from the Chicago based band is a masterpiece of punk rock. They have managed to combine the best of their snot nosed punk rock style with loops and other little song tidbits reminiscent of a head on collision between Crass and the white album era Beatles. Not possible, you say? Purchase it and you too can bask in the glory of what is a truly twisted example of a band with serious mental issues."
