Synopsis

Album Description
Viktoria Tolstoy, great-great-granddaughter of famous Russian writer Leo Tolstoy, is one of the most successful Scandinavian female singers and was the first Scandinavian singer signed to the famous Blue Note label back in 1996. On Shining On You, she performs songs written for her personally by famous piano player Esbjörn Svensson of the E.S.T. Trio. "A Swedish singer ... who resembles the young ,b>Debbie Harry and is very good indeed, deserves notice. The songs, in the Broadway songform tradition, are written and arranged by Swedish pianist Esbjörn Svensson, the leader of the group E.S.T. ... Tolstoy is a hypnotic stylist." -- International Herald Tribune

CD Reviews

Smooth and Sweet

(4 out of 5 stars)

"Happened upon this artist by accident. Thank goodness for accidents.

The accompanyment is crisp and clear and flawless. The lyrics are sweet, and her voice is smooth. In terms of 'who is she like' I would have to say that, and only smooth-jazz/pop-vocal purists will get the reference, I would liken her to Kevyn Lettau, but without the Latin influence. Style-wise, definitely similar to Lettau. Her voice and the choice of songs are a perfect combination, the choice of these smooth songs fitting her light, clear style. All in all, this is definitely a worthwhile release.

If you're a fan of good, pure, lite jazz, (or if you are a fan of Kevyn Lettau) give this one a try."
