Although not the truly complete collection of Songs of the Auvergne, this famous recording has been preferred for more than 30 years. Victoria de Los Angeles is a singer who tends to be taken for granted: she's so good and reliable, and performs all her major roles with so little fuss, that it's easy to forget just what a great artist she really is. When it comes to these stylized folksongs, she's well-nigh unbeatable. Her singing is the opposite of Elisabeth Schwarzkopf's, for example--artless rather than artful, her innocence and simplicity the genuine article. The reedy tone of the French orchestra adds an authentic tang to the experience. --David Hurwitz

The soul of rural France
DR. Peter Bourke | Quirindi, N.S.W. Australia | 01/01/2002
(5 out of 5 stars)

"These songs range from love laments to rollicking Bourrees. The spirit of the music is by turns dreamy and sultry to impassioned and tempestuous. The themes are of an idealized rural idyll. So ,it is that they can be debased by an over academic approach that lessens their origins as folk songs. The colourlesness of modern urban life has led to a extravagance of wild emotion in artistic interpretation ,such that the performer rather than the work takes precedence,so that this absolutely fabulous marvelous sublime recording is not as generally so highly regarded as itwas 30 years ago.Victoria de los Angeles voice has the qualities to present these songs as they were originally concieved and at the same time unselfconsciously create high art.Itis her very artlessness that paradoxically succeeds where others fail. She has a true feel for the people and countryside that inspiredthe music. To further judge her comitment to the more earthy origins of art music listen to her play guitar and sing ''ADIOS GRANADA''on The fabulous Victoria de los Angeles-if its getable"
