As an original member of both Joe Zawinul's Zawinul Syndicate and Ramsey Lewis's Urban Knights, bassist Victor Bailey has played both contemporary jazz with a rock edge and R&B-laced jazz. On this nine-track disc, he straddles both worlds quite effectively. Besides a totally out-of-place and somewhat self-indulgent vocal piece titled "Where's Paco," this is a solid program of post-fusion music. The Parliament/Funkadelic medley of "(Not Just) Knee Deep" and "One Nation Under a Groove," and the catchy "Rope-a-Dope" are great examples of progressive 21st-century jazz-funk, while guitarist Dean Brown, and especially keyboardist Jim Beard--who's a revelation throughout the proceedings--shine brightly in blistering solos that emphasize the rock in jazz-rock fusion. Underrated reedman Bennie Maupin also appears on two tracks. He plays the kind of lines on his bass clarinet that he did with Herbie Hancock's Headhunters in the '70's on a hot tune he wrote called "Steamy," switching to tenor sax on the title track, which closes the album. Despite the firepower of his guests, Bailey's bass isn't overshadowed at all. --Mark Ruffin

CD Reviews

Almost no surprises...
Serdar Karabati | Istanbul, Turkey | 03/18/2003
(3 out of 5 stars)

"The music on this album is closer to pop/fusion formula typical of late 80s/early 90s than anything else. Almost no surprises except for few ideas on closing tracks. I would be more pleased to hear more unconventional playing and composing from a great electric bass player. Though this is good music to hear live I cannot really say the CD is worth buying as a vintage item."
"THAT'S RIGHT!" It's Victor

"I've Been following Mr. Bailey ever since his first solo release "Bottoms Up," and he hasn't disappointed me yet.Victor's new release "That's Right" contains a few tunes that are stretched too thin with repetition, but for the most part, The album (opps! I mean cd...showing my age!)contains the usual virtuoso musicianship always prevalent on Victor's recordings. Bailey continues to follow the standard set by one of his idols, Jaco Pastorious, with his powerfully understated playing, not choosing to bang you over the head with heavy-handed solos that overwhelm the listener.

I was also pleasantly surprised to hear one of Jazz/Fusions great sax players, Bennie Maupin, still in fine form on the tracks "Nothing But Net" and "That's Right," while drummer Omar Hakim continues to amaze me with his mastery over the kit."
